What is Enlisy ?
Enlisy is a Python based GNU/Linux distribution for advanced users with a focus on simplicity, minimality and only the necessary. We have this focus without making away with things like a uniform and attractive look, optimized and up-to-date packages, and innovative features.

Why should I use Enlisy ?
- It has a simple layout, which means that it's easy to understand.
- It uses a rolling release approach, which means that you'll never have to reinstall to have the latest packages.
- Tries to always have the latest stable release of an application available.
- Optimized for Intel 686 (i686) compatible processors, like the Intel Pentium Pro, Pentium 2, AMD K6 or newer.
- It uses InitNG as its init system, which not only gives a faster startup of the system, but also handles processes in a more innovative and effective way by starting them asynchronously.
- Uses the package manager Apport, inspired by Arch Linux's package manager Pacman, and written in the programming language Python.
- Has an attractive and uniform look on everything from the websites to the installation program to the Live CDs.
- Open source and a completely open developement model (via enlisy.org).
- Tries to be minimalistic and to only provide the most necessary applications by default.
- Like Apport, every application we write for the system is written in Python.
- Combines great ideas and applications from other GNU/Linux distributions with our own.
- The packages we provide will always come with the header files to reduce the need to split up a package into multiple parts. One example is GCC, which in our case wont be divided in two parts, one for GCC and one for its library, but will come as only one package!
- Will only use a standard vanilla kernel without any patches as far as possible.
- Every application or function we develop will usually be released under the GNU GPL version 2 or higher.
- The developers listens to users ideas and suggestions. So the user has a big chance of changing the future of the distribution.
- It has, and are going to have, a simple style of documentation, who's not going to mention the most obvious things. Only commands etc. This make you get started with things, in only a few minutes.
- Today Enlisy is rather hard to use for a beginner. But we plan on making it much easier for everyone to use. It is up to you as a user to decide how you want the distribution to turn out by submitting your ideas to us.
History:
The history of Enlisy dates back as far as January 2005 when one of its current developers came up with the brilliant idea to create his very own GNU/Linux distribution. His vision was then to base it on what he thought was the best GNU/Linux system at the time; the now canceled distribution Progeny Debian.
In the same year, in the middle of summer, when he was almost ready to release his first version (based on the then current version of Kanotix Linux), he was going to delete all the files in a catalogue, but unluckily managed to run the command rm -rf * (A command that deletes every file and catalogue that comes in its way). All the files he had worked on, including the new GNU/Linux distribution, was deleted.
That same year, in September, another person proclaimed on one of Sweden's biggest discussion forums that he also wanted to create a new distribution. He was also looking for people who might be interested in joining him.
A few days later three new persons joined him, along with the original initiator of the first distribution based on Kanotix. The planning and development was then started on September 27th 2005. They decided that they would base large parts of the distribution on ideas from the distribution Arch Linux. Among the ideas was the package manager, Pacman. One of them had already created a package manager inspired by Pacman with many improvements written in Python, but had yet to name it. They settled on the name Apport, which is what you would say to a dog in Swedish when you play fetch.
More developers joined and left and today there are only three of the early developers left.
